Cultural Aspect of Holbrook, Massachusetts
Founded in 1997, Sisters in Stitches has made an impact on the African American culture for years. Sisters in Stitches was the only African American quilting guild to exist in New England upon it's inception. Many of the members grew up in South Boston with their roots in Barbados. These women learned from their grandmothers or mothers who sewed. The major differences between the African American quilt and the Anglo American quilt is the use of vibrant colors, textures, asymmetry, and the unrestricted rules and laws they have to abide when creating these quilts.
The purpose of the Sisters in Stitches quilting guild is to provide their quilts to their family members, raffle in charities, exhibits, and for the enjoyment of creating quilts.
